Prudent parenting: murre now or murre later?

نویسنده

چکیده

Diving into parenthood is never easy, but for common murres (Uria aalge) some positively prudent parenting is required. These birds have to decide whether they care more about the chicks they have got or about having additional chicks in the future. Anne Storey and her colleagues were able to measure the physiological tell-tale signs of this balancing act both when food is scarce and when food is abundant. And, the team showed how stressing less and diving deep can help when raising chicks (Storey et al., 2017).

General Range and Washington Distribution

The common murre is a gregarious, colonially nesting, and circumpolar seabird with a boreal, low Arctic, and northern temperate distribution (American Ornithologists’ Union 1983, Nettleship and Evans 1985, Gaston and Jones 1998, Ainley et al. 2002). Based mostly on morphological differences, there have been up to eight subspecies or races described for the common murre (Storer 1952, Tuck 1961, ...

Signals from seabirds indicate changing biology of capelin stocks

Key forage species lie at the core of complex marine food webs, providing essential linkages among trophic levels. We examined the interactions of an important forage and commercial fish, capelin Mallotus villosus, and its primary avian predator, the common murre Uria aalge, in the NW Atlantic. Murres are capelin specialists and robust samplers of capelin biology. During the 1990s, the coldest ...

Binding of radio . . iodinated gonadotropin to the ovary of exotic carp (

Heterologous murre! gonadotropic hormone (m-GtH) binds to common carp oocyte plasma membrane and enhances steroid secretion. With increasing concentration of radio-labelled hormone the receptor binding is also found to increase linearly up to a certain concentration and then decrease. The [1 !] murre! GtH binding characteristics to a preparation of common carp ovarian plasma membrane shows satu...

The Arctic: Glacial Refugium or Area of Secondary Contact? Inference from the Population Genetic Structure of the Thick-Billed Murre (Uria lomvia), with Implications for Management.

Quaternary glaciations affected the distribution of many species. Here, we investigate whether the Arctic represented a glacial refugium during the Last Glacial Maximum or an area of secondary contact following the ice retreat, by analyzing the genetic population structure of the thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia), a seabird that breeds throughout the North Atlantic, North Pacific and Arctic Ocea...
